Conversations with Mandkhai – 10 Questions

Conversations with Mandkhai – 10 Questions

Running a brand is a world of constant movement, imagination and responsibility. Between designing collections, overseeing production in Mongolia, and managing her London store, Mandkhai balances creativity with the realities of building an independent fashion house.
In this edition of Conversations with Mandkhai, we ask her ten questions to get to know the woman behind the scenes – her rituals, her inspirations, and the small joys that shape her everyday.

1. How do you start your day?
Recently I’ve been starting my mornings with two cups of warm water followed by a coffee. It’s a simple ritual that brings clarity before the day begins.

2. What words do you live by?
An old Mongolian proverb guides me. “Айсан бол бүү эхл, нэгэнт эхэлсэн бол бүү ай.” It translates to “If you're afraid, don't do it. If you're doing it, don't be afraid.” It keeps me grounded in courage.

3. What’s the first thing that draws your eye in someone’s style?
Proportion. I notice immediately when something is beautifully fitted to a person. Good balance in an outfit always stands out.

4. What does “freedom” mean to you as a designer?
Freedom, for me, is being an independent brand. It means creating on my own terms without compromising the spirit of the work.

5. If you could jump on a plane tomorrow, where would you go?
Hawaii. It has always been a very special place for me.

6. Which colour palette are you most drawn to at the moment?
I’m excited about a shade called Cloud Blue from one of my next collections. It’s a cool-toned, very soft pastel blue. Instead of winter white, imagine winter cloud blue.

7. What challenge has shaped you most in business?
The constant challenge is balancing creative expression with commercial success. Staying true to your vision while building a sustainable business is always evolving.

8. Paris or New York?
New York.

9. Matcha or coffee?
Coffee, always.

10. If you could eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
A Mongolian dish for sure, likely something with noodles. Comforting and connected to home.
